Russian journalists from the Air Force and Mediazone and volunteers were able to confirm the death of 15,136 Russians in Ukraine. This is data for the year of the war from open sources, confirmed publicly.
Among this number of dead are more than 1,200 mobilized, more than 1,300 prisoners, more than 1,800 officers, as well as 199 officers of the highest rank – lieutenant colonels, colonels and generals. Journalists note that the real death toll is much higher, but these losses are higher than the official estimates of those who died during the Afghan war.
In early February, it was reported that nearly 20 Russian generals had died since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine. These are Japan’s intelligence estimates for cooperation with the US and Europe.
According to Mediazona, Russia lost more Russians during the year of the invasion than the Soviet Union during the Afghan war, where, according to official estimates, 15,51 people died.
Journalists who keep a list of Russians who died in the war by name noted that the real level of losses is much higher, since these data take into account only those cases that are confirmed publicly.
The Russian Defense Ministry reported its losses three times during the war, the last time in September 2022. Then the Russian side claimed that 5,937 Russian servicemen were killed.
The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, which daily counts Russian losses, reported on the morning of February 24 that 146,820 Russians had been “liquidated” during the year of the full-scale Russian invasion.
