Ukraine and its supporters hope to deepen Russia’s diplomatic isolation by getting nearly three-quarters of the General Assembly to vote yes.
The UN General Assembly is ready to vote for the resolution presented by Ukraine and its allies on the need for a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in accordance with the founding UN Charter. On Wednesday, February 22, Reuters wrote.
Consideration of the resolution is scheduled for February 24. The US representative said the vote for the document “will go down in history.”
“We will see what the position of the people of the world is on the issue of peace in Ukraine,” said US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield.
“Ukraine and its supporters hope that almost three-quarters of the members of the General Assembly will vote in favor,” the agency noted.
The draft UN resolution, which is not binding but carries political weight, echoes a request by the General Assembly last year for Moscow to withdraw troops and stop the fighting.
At the same time, the previous day, UN Secretary-General António Guterres recalled that all states must refrain in their international relations from threats or the use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state.
Earlier, the Ukrainian authorities started a comprehensive process aimed at excluding the Russian Federation from the UN Security Council and from the United Nations as a whole.
António Guterres condemned the Russian aggression and called the war a dark milestone for the entire international community.
