The decision was made after the main journalistic trade union of the Russian Federation opened branches in the occupied territories of Ukraine.
The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) on Wednesday, February 22, suspended the membership of the Russian Union of Journalists. This was stated in the IFJ statement.
The report said membership of Russia’s main journalistic trade union (RUJ) was suspended after the Russians created branches in the occupied regions of Ukraine.
RUJ membership was suspended with immediate effect after the Executive Body made a “preliminary decision on exclusion”, which is the highest sanction within the Executive Body’s power for actions “contrary to the principles or objectives … of the Federation”
The decision came after an investigation into the conduct of the RUJ following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the establishment of RUJ cells in annexed Ukrainian territories.
“The IFJ is an organization built on international solidarity, on the principles of cooperation between member trade unions and respect for the rights of all journalists. The actions of the Union of Journalists of Russia which created four cell in the annexed Ukrainian territory clearly violated this unity. and sowed separation between the brotherly unions,” he explained to IFJ President Dominic Pradali.
