The Russian invasion caused more than UAH 750 billion in damage and destruction to Ukrainian infrastructure, cities and communities.

Latvia is ready to play the role of a lawyer for Ukraine during the special tribunal in the Russian Federation. This was announced on Tuesday, February 21, by the Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Olena Kondratiuk on Facebook.

The politician indicated that this issue has already been discussed in a meeting with the Minister of Justice of Latvia, Inessa Libina-Egner. The issue of legal support for the confiscation of frozen Russian assets for the restoration of Ukraine was also raised.

“This is one of the issues related to the creation of an international special tribunal to punish Russia for the crime of aggression against Ukraine. The appropriate legal mechanisms for the confiscation of frozen sanctioned assets of Russia should be done at the EU level. The country’s Ministry of justice assured that Latvia will play the role of Ukraine’s lawyer in this matter”, – wrote Kondratyuk.

The Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada noted that Russia’s aggression is very expensive for Ukraine. And according to preliminary data, the damage to Ukrainian infrastructure, cities and communities has already exceeded UAH 750 billion.

“Therefore, the mere freezing of Russian funds and assets of EU countries is not enough. These funds must be confiscated and used as soon as possible to restore Ukraine, without waiting for the end of the war ,” Kondratyuk said.

It should be noted that the Latvian authorities supported the amendments to the law on support for the civilian population of Ukraine. They provide the possibility to transfer state-owned vehicles to the ownership of the government of Ukraine free of charge.

Remember, according to the President of Latvia, Egils Levits, the country’s aid to Ukraine reached 0.93% of the Latvian GDP.
