The European Union recalled the “red line” for China in relations with Russia, which is waging a full-scale war against Ukraine. Beijing will cross the “red line” if it provides weapons to the aggressor country.
This was stated by EU Foreign Minister Josep Borrell, writes Politico.
Borrell’s warning came after US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken expressed “deep concern” that China was considering providing potential lethal assistance to Russia.
At the same time, Borrell met with a senior Chinese diplomat, Wang Yi. The European diplomat indicated that the EU was concerned about the possible provision of weapons to the Kremlin.
I asked him not to do this and expressed not only our concern, but also that for us this would be a red line in our relationship … He told me that they were not going to do this, that they were not planning to do this. But we will be careful,” Borrell said in Brussels on February 20.
The foreign ministers of the EU countries, who were present at the meeting of the Council of EU Foreign Ministers in Brussels, also warned Beijing not to go beyond this limit.
Recall that Chinese President Xi Jinping intends to make a “peace speech” on the anniversary of the start of the war in Ukraine, where he will presumably present a “peace plan”.
