The operator of the Mavic 3 drone from the 59th separate motorized infantry brigade, using an RGT-27S2 thermobaric grenade, destroyed an abandoned Russian infantry fighting vehicle. Previously, their use was not known.
Military writes that on the video from the UAV camera you can clearly see the fall of a cylindrical grenade and the subsequent powerful thermobaric explosion.
The RGO-27 hand grenades were developed by the State Research Institute of Chemical Products and are produced by the state-owned enterprise Spetsoboronmash, also known as the Artyom GAC.
The ammunition was developed in two form factors: RGT-27S with a rectangular body and RGT-27S2 with a cylindrical body. They are designed to engage enemy personnel in shelters of various types, in open areas, as well as to disable automotive and lightly armored vehicles.
They were first presented publicly during a demonstration of new types of weapons at a training ground in the Chernihiv region in 2017, and already in 2020, the RGO-27S and S2 were adopted by the Armed Forces of Ukraine. However, there was no information about the serial production of these ammunition for the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Thermobaric ammunition uses the effect of a volumetric explosion of an aerosol cloud of a flammable substance. Due to the large size of the cloud, the energy of the shock wave can hit the enemy at a greater distance.
