The company denied all the facts provided in the joint investigation of the three publications. The company’s administration says it provides assistance “only to the civilian population.”
The management of the French Auchan chain of stores said that it does not supply goods to the Russian military. This was stated in a company statement published on the Auchan Retail website.
“Auchan Retail categorically rejects the allegations made in the investigation report and their interpretation. Auchan Retail is very surprised by these allegations, which are in no way supported by the facts of the internal investigation,” said the statement.
Auchan also said its stores in Russia provided aid “only to the civilian population” and did not hold charity fundraisers for the Russian army.
As the company explained, in March last year, the mayor’s office of St. Petersburg placed an order for “collecting aid for the population,” and the list of needs did not include goods that might have been intended for the military.
The company also insisted that it had not installed “humanitarian aid collection points for Donbass” in its supermarkets in Russia.
Recall that the previous day, a joint investigation of the three publications The Insider, Le Monde and Bellingcat was published, which stated that the Russian “daughter” of the French Auchan from the beginning of the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation in Ukraine supplied goods to the Russian military in occupied Ukrainian territories under the guise of humanitarian aid to civilians. Additionally, the branch assisted the Russian military’s registration and enlistment offices in recruiting mobilized personnel.
Note that in March 2022, the CEO of Auchan, Yves Claude, in response to public calls to leave the Russian market, said that the network will continue to work in the Russian Federation, because it “acts in the interest of the population of civilians.”
