The Scot, working as a security guard at the British Embassy in Berlin, collected secret documents and gave them to the Russian special services.
A British embassy guard in Berlin, exposed as a spy for Russia, has been sentenced by a London court to 13 years and two months in prison. This was reported by The Guardian.
It is reported that 58-year-old David Ballantyne Smith, a native of Paisley in Scotland, while working as a security guard at the British Embassy in Berlin, collected secret documents and passed them on to Russian intelligence agencies. He was detained in 2021 as part of an undercover operation.
Last November, Smith pleaded guilty to eight offenses under the Official Secrets Act. One of the accusations relates to the transfer of information in November 2020 to Major General Sergei Chukhrov, the Russian military attache in Berlin.
It was previously reported that Russia was recruiting spies in Britain.
