Mark Meadows, former White House chief of staff under President Donald Trump, is being subpoenaed by the special counsel investigating Trump and his role in the Jan. 6 attack, a source told CNN.
Meadows, Trump’s last chief of staff, received the subpoena “in January,” CNN reported.
The station said Special Counsel Jack Smith’s office is seeking testimony and documents related to the attack. Smith is also tasked with investigating the former president’s mishandling of classified documents.
Meadows was with Trump in the Oval Office as supporters of the former president stormed the Capitol on January 6, 2021. Meadows has previously refused to testify and claimed executive privilege in other investigations of Trump.
The report follows news that former Vice President Mike Pence was subpoenaed for his testimony in the January 6 inquiry last week. Pence is ready to fight the Justice Department’s subpoena and called the action “unconstitutional and unprecedented.”
“We will take this case as necessary, if necessary to the U.S. Supreme Court, because to me it’s a separation of powers issue,” Pence said.
HuffPost has reached out to George Terwilliger, an attorney for Meadows, and the Justice Department for comment.
