China a total of 83,150 COVID-19 related hospital deaths have been reported since December 8 last year when the policy was lifted Zero COVIDand February 9, according to the China Center for Disease Control.

The report indicates that 92.02% of deaths were caused by an exacerbation of the underlying disease in combination with COVID-19.

The main cause of the remaining deaths was respiratory failure caused by corona viruswhich quickly spread across the country in December and January after restrictions were eased.

The CDC reported last week that the number of deaths from COVID-19 in the country’s polyclinics fell by 97.6% on February 6, compared with a peak of 4,273 deaths recorded on January 4.

Peak infections

Meanwhile, the number of hospitalizations for COVID-19 peaked at 1.6 million on January 5, when it began to decline to the 60,000 registered on February 6.

After nearly three years of severe restrictions, arrests and near-total border closures that have erupted into protests across the country, China began dismantling the “Zero COVID” strategy in early December, and on January 8 downgraded the disease management from category A (maximum alert level) to B, thus effectively marking the end of this policy.
