The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has appointed a new First Deputy Minister of Defense Oleksiy Reznikov. They became Lieutenant General Alexander Pavlyuk.
General Pavlyuk perfectly knows the problems of modern warfare and the needs of our army, possesses the necessary leadership and managerial qualities. There will be even more synergy in cooperation with the General Staff,” Reznikov wrote on Facebook earlier, commenting on Pavlyuk’s candidacy.
At the same time, Ivan Rusnak was fired from the post of Reznikov’s first deputy.
Pavlyuk is a career soldier. In March 2022, he was awarded the title of Hero of Ukraine. In 2021, he was appointed commander of the Joint Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
In 2006, Pavliuk commanded the Ukrainian peacekeeping force in Kosovo.
The appointment of six new deputy heads of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine was also announced. A week ago, after the tragic death of Denis Monastyrsky in a helicopter crash in Brovary, Igor Klimenko became the new head of the department. Then we spoke in detail about the reshuffle in the department.
A military man can now become the First Deputy Minister of Defense: Volodymyr Zelensky has signed a corresponding decree. According to the amendments, lieutenant general and vice admiral can become the first deputy minister for the period of the legal regime of martial law.
According to the decree, the Cabinet of Ministers must also submit proposals to the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine on strengthening democratic civilian control over the bodies and formations of the security and defense sector in accordance with NATO standards.
Earlier, Defense Minister Alexei Reznikov had already announced changes to the Defense Ministry.
Vitaly Deynega, founder and ex-chairman of the Come Back Alive Foundation, may become one of the deputy heads of the Ministry of Defense.
Pavlyuk led the defense of Kyiv in the spring of 2022. He was the first high-ranking Ukrainian military man who, a month before the Russian invasion, in January 2022, speaking with journalists from The Times, publicly condemned Ukraine’s abandonment of nuclear weapons, calling the 1994 Budapest Memorandum a wrong step.
