Russia leased this city from Astana, but considering its special status, local residents were promised not to be forced to go to war.
The head of the Baikonur city administration signed an order on a one-time payment of 260 thousand rubles to local residents who will go to the war in Ukraine on mobilization or voluntarily. This was reported by the Kazakh news agency KazTAG, as well as the local publication Voice of the People.
The resolution itself was signed on February 7, but local media drew attention to the document on February 13, when the Baikonur prosecutor’s office announced it.
These financial payments are planned to be financed from the city budget.
The city of Baikonur is the administrative center of the cosmodrome of the same name in Kazakhstan. Russia has leased the city and the Baikonur Cosmodrome since 1994. The agreement with Kazakhstan is valid until 2050. Baikonur has been granted the status corresponding to the city of federal importance of the Russian Federation.
The rent is $115 million per year.
In September 2022, the mobilization was announced in Russia, but the administration of Baikonur said that, due to the special status of the city, no one was forcibly poisoned in the war.
As previously reported, the authorities of Kazakhstan intend to close their trade representation in Russia.
