Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, during his visit to Sudan, agreed on the creation of a military base on the Red Sea. Sources in Sudan told the AP news agency that all concerns about the deal have been resolved.
The agreement provides for the deployment of a base in Port Sudan with 300 Russian sailors. According to the agreement, up to four ships can be at the base at the same time, including ships with nuclear engines.
Russia will get a port with quick access to the Indian Ocean. In exchange, Russia will supply arms to Sudan. The contract is concluded for 25 years with the possibility of prolongation for 10 years.
To ratify the agreement, AP specifies, it is necessary to wait until the framework agreement between the country’s military leadership and a number of parties and civil society associations is implemented in Sudan. The African country is expected to elect a civilian prime minister, followed by a general election. The President of Sudan will also be elected from civilians.
The conclusion by Russia and Sudan of an agreement on the creation of a logistics service center for the Russian Navy on the Red Sea coast became known in early December 2020.
Earlier, Bloomberg reported that Lavrov’s visit to Sudan came as a surprise to the West. According to the agency, the foreign minister’s trip coincided with the arrival of six long-awaited EU and US ambassadors. Bloomberg clarified that the “players” have a strategy for Africa.
