On the night of February 11, the number of victims of the earthquake that shook Turkey and Syria reached 25,401 people. Another 80,104 people were injured.
The UN predicts an increase in the number of earthquake victims in Turkey and Syria. The organization believes that the number of casualties may reach 50 thousand people. This was announced on Saturday, February 11, by the UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Martin Griffiths, reports Sky News.
“I think it’s hard to estimate the number of dead precisely, because you still have to go under the rubble. But I’m sure the number will double or more. It’s terrible. Nature is coming back in a very brutal way. It’s shocking. Underneath these mountains of debris, everything still has people, some of them still alive,” Griffiths said.
The Deputy Secretary General of the UN suggested that the number of victims of the earthquake will rise to at least 50,000 people.
Griffiths noted that the rescue work in Turkey and Syria will soon be over, because the ideal time for rescuing people is 72 hours.
“But they got someone alive an hour or two ago. It’s probably very difficult to decide when to stop this rescue phase and move on to the next phase, which will also have its own problems,” he said.
Note that the death toll from the earthquake in Turkey and Syria exceeded 25 thousand people.
As you know, strong earthquakes occurred in Turkey and Syria on February 6.
