He Chilean National Disaster Prevention and Response Service (Senapred) reported that the fire that devastated central Chile for a week has devastated more than 366,000 hectares, according to data collected through Thursday evening.
The data also shows that most of the destroyed areas – almost 300,000 hectares – burned in the first two days of the fires, when weather conditions were at their most unfavorable – with winds of 30 kilometers per hour, temperatures above 30 degrees and air humidity below 30% – and the least number of emergency services.
In recent hours, the flames have spread with greater force in the regions of Sible and La Araucania, where a total of 55,000 and 91,000 hectares respectively have already burned, although Biobio, which accounts for about half of the burned area, i.e. 159,000 hectares, has suffered the most. .
More than 1200 houses burned down.
The report also clarifies that the number of destroyed buildings is 1206, of which 602 are in the Biobio area, 305 in Nubla and 296 in La Araucania.
In this regard, tonight the Chilean army imposed a curfew in 28 communes located in the areas of La Araucania, Biobio and Suble.
According to the official statement, the measure will come into force at 00:00 local time (03:00 GMT) and will last until 05:00 (08:00 GMT) in Itata province, Chuble district, in particular in the cities of Kobkekura, Koelemu, Ninhue, Portezuelo, Quirihue, Ranquil and Trehuaco), as well as Quillon in the province of Diguillin.
In the Biobio region, this will affect the cities of Arauco, Contulmo, Mulchen, Tome, Florida, Valki, Nascimento and Santa Juana, and in La Araucania, Angol, Collipulli, Curacautin, Ersilia, Los Sauces, Lumaco, Puren, Renaico, Bring, Victoria, Galvarino and Lautaro.
Curfew
This morning, Rear Admiral Jorge Keitel, head of defense of Chile’s central Biobio region, had already warned that a controversial curfew would take effect tonight, but limited it to just eight communes.
The decision comes hours after President Gabriel Boric announced the possibility during a visit to Santa Juana and in the midst of heated debate over the wisdom of restricting movement.
Requested by business groups, it is resisted by emergency services and emergency services that fight the fire, as it makes it difficult to quickly respond to new outbreaks and makes evacuation work more difficult if the flames spread.
The fires, now a week old and yet to be extinguished, have claimed the lives of 24 people and left more than 5,500 people homeless.
Almost thirty detainees
Lack of funds – in Chile the fire brigade is not professional – mismanagement of forests and adverse climatic conditions hastened the tragedy, the most serious of its kind in Chile.
About thirty people have been arrested to date on their alleged responsibility for the arson, most of them due to negligence.
In the Biobio region this Thursday evening, several residents received an evacuation order.
