The deputy said that many in the State Duma are inclined to believe that the moratorium on the death penalty should be lifted. In particular, for “traitors” – opposition journalists and bloggers who left the country.
State Duma Deputy Andrey Kolesnik proposed introducing the death penalty for Russia’s “treason”. Kolesnik expressed this opinion on Monday, February 6, in Podmoskovye Today.
In particular, the representative spoke about Russian publicists and bloggers who were sentenced in absentia to leave Russia.
“Okay, they just ran away from Russia… Let them sit and work. But when someone works against Russia, it’s called ‘information war’. It’s more serious than a weapon… Evil tongues are worse than a gun,” Kolesnik said.
According to him, the “traitors to the motherland” were punished according to the law. He also did not rule out that the sentence could be carried out without returning the convicted Russians to their homeland.
“My personal opinion – although, perhaps, I will express it in the parliament – if someone has committed some serious crime against Russia, then the sentences can be different. And this sentence can be enforced on the territory where he is located,” the deputy threatened.
The reporter asked the deputy if he was talking about the death penalty.
“This extraordinary measure of punishment can be used for treason. Today we have a moratorium on the death penalty, although it exists in our law. The decision to lift the moratorium was made not by the State Duma, but by the court. Although and many in the State Duma are inclined to this,” answered Kolesnik.
The death penalty as a punishment in Russia, according to the constitution, should not be imposed or enforced since 1997.
Earlier, the Deputy Head of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, Dmitry Medvedev, allowed the lifting of the moratorium on the death penalty in Russia, especially for “traitors” and “saboteurs”.
In the “DPR” the death penalty is “legalized”.
