The US is preparing to impose 200 percent duties on imports of Russian-made aluminum as early as this week to put pressure on Moscow over the approaching anniversary of the invasion of Ukraine.
Bloomberg writes about this, citing informed sources.
The move has been under consideration for months, the agency said. The U.S. is raising tariffs, sources say, partly because Moscow is selling aluminum well below market value on the U.S. market and harming U.S. companies.
According to Bloomberg, US President Joe Biden has not yet given official approval for the measures, and there are concerns in the administration about the possible damage that this could cause to American industries, including aerospace and automotive.
Such high duties will effectively put an end to metal imports from Russia to the US.
Russia is the second largest metal producer in the world, and aluminum supplied from Russia traditionally accounts for about 10% of total US imports.
