A powerful earthquake of magnitude 7.8 struck southern Turkey and northern Syria on Monday, February 6.
A natural disaster in Turkey claimed the lives of at least 284 people, another 2,323 were injured. This was stated by Vice President of Turkey Fuat Oktay. In Syria, 237 people were killed and 639 were injured. This is reported by CNN Turk and Associated Press.
Tremors were recorded at a depth of 7 km at 4:17 local time. After the earthquake, 32 aftershocks were recorded, the magnitude of the strongest was 6.6. The shocks were also felt in Egypt, Lebanon and Iraq.
The Turkish authorities have declared the highest level of alert, providing for international assistance. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan tweeted that “search and rescue teams were immediately dispatched” to areas affected by the earthquake. Rescuers are looking for the wounded.
In Syria, tremors here occurred on the territory of opposition-controlled regions.
Recall, on January 21, an earthquake of magnitude 3.1 occurred in the Chernivtsi region. Tremors were felt near the village of Kobolchin, Dniester region.
