Prosecutor General Irina Venediktova asked Ukrainians, especially government officials, to suppress their feelings about blogger Anatoly Shariy being imprisoned in Spain so that they do not refuse to extradite him to Ukraine. He wrote this on Facebook on Thursday, May 5th.
According to him, the Office of the Prosecutor General at the Spanish Ministry of Justice has now confirmed the intention to request the extradition of Shariy based on an earlier request for his temporary arrest.
“I strongly urge all concerned citizens to refrain from emotional statements about a detained suspect committing treason and violating the equality of citizens, depending on their race, nationality, religious beliefs, disability and other characteristics. I especially urge government officials to act with restraint: from law enforcement officers to representatives at all levels, “Venediktova wrote.
He explained that Shariy is likely to exercise his legal right to refuse the simplified procedure of extradition to Ukraine, that is, voluntary extradition.
“If this is exactly what happens, then Anatoly Shariy, with the help of his legal advisers, could use a variety of defense tactics, including trying to convince the competent court of the exclusive political basis for bringing to him on criminal responsibility, “he stressed. .
Recall that on the morning of May 5, the SBU announced Shariy’s detention in Spain, without providing details. He is suspected of committing crimes under two articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine: Art. 111 (high treason), Art. 161 (violation of the equality of citizens depending on their race, nationality, religious beliefs, disability and other characteristics).
The media also reported that Shariy was released on bail and at the place of residence in Spain. He will await a court decision on extradition.
