Today, February 2, the Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmygal, at a press conference following the joint meeting of the government of Ukraine and the European Commission, said that by the end of 2023, Ukraine wants to be ready for the negotiations on full membership in the EU , and by the end of 2024 – on membership in the EU, Interfax-Ukraine reports.
“Ukraine’s efforts have been positively assessed by representatives of the European Commission. We expect that in the spring the European Commission will give a formal conclusion on our progress, and at the end of 2023 it will make a recommendation to the European Council about starting negotiations on joining the EU,” Shmyhal said.
The prime minister noted that all seven points of the European Commission’s recommendations have been implemented or have significant progress and approximate deadlines for implementation.
“An oral assessment in the spring will give us an understanding if we have completed the implementation of these seven points, and if we can now work on an analysis of the 35 sections of the future negotiations in the summer, ” said the prime minister.
Shmyhal noted his readiness for the issue of Ukraine’s accession to the EU to be a discussion process and may take some time, but emphasized that Ukraine’s task is to do everything so that there are no questions for it in time of the EU accession discussion.
“We want to be ready for negotiations by the end of the year, and we want to be ready for membership by the end of next year,” Shmygal said.
The prime minister hopes that political approval will be received on February 3 of a priority action plan for the enhanced implementation of a free trade area in the EU for 2023-2024, and believes that Ukraine can count on the rapid progress in sectoral access to EU markets .
