Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis believes that members of the European Union do not need to have Russian ambassadors in their countries.
In most cases, this is no longer a diplomatic, but a propaganda institution that hides war crimes and generally promotes genocide, the head of the Lithuanian Foreign Ministry told Delfi.
Landsbergis said on January 31 that he considers it pointless for Russian ambassadors to stay in EU countries, so it makes no sense to have an ambassador, a Russian ambassador, in any European capital.
The minister recalled that Lithuania expelled the Russian ambassador in the spring of 2022 in response to the killings of civilians in Bucha, and in January Estonia and Latvia announced the expulsion of Russian ambassadors.
I do not rule out that even more countries, having seen what is happening in Ukraine, will be able to make sure that this is the right path,” Landsbergis said.
At the same time, he stressed that there are different points of view on this topic, according to the Lithuanian edition of VZ.
At the end of January, Russia announced a reduction in the level of diplomatic relations with Estonia, demanding that the country’s ambassador leave Moscow. The Russian Foreign Ministry said that Tallinn “has put total Russophobia and the cultivation of hostility towards our country in the rank of state policy.” The Estonian Foreign Ministry responded by announcing the expulsion of the Russian ambassador.
Hours after the announcement by the Russian Foreign Ministry, Latvia announced that it was similarly lowering the level of diplomatic relations with Russia “in solidarity with Estonia” and “in connection with Russia’s ongoing brutal aggression against Ukraine.” Moscow and Riga also announced mutual expulsions of ambassadors.
