The Ukrainian president called on António Guterres to help conduct another evacuation mission.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy spoke by phone with UN Secretary General António Guterres. The conversation related to the evacuation of people from the Azovstal plant in Mariupol. This was reported by the press service of the President of Ukraine on Wednesday night, May 4.
In a conversation with Guterres, the head of state mentioned the role of the UN and the International Committee of the Red Cross in the first phase of the evacuation of people from Azovstal. Then 121 people were released from the blocked plant.
“The whole world has learned about the role of the UN and the ICRC here. It has shown that international organizations can be effective,” Zelensky stressed.
At the same time, the Ukrainian president called on the UN Secretary General to oversee another evacuation mission to rescue all the wounded from Azovstal.
“The lives of the people staying there are in danger. Each and everyone is important to us. We ask for your help to save them,” he said.
Recall that on May 3, Russia began to attack the Azovstal plant. Two female civilians were killed that day.
On Wednesday morning, the attack continued and communication with Azovstal defenders was lost. By nightfall, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that the attack had not been successful. Tazhka was able to contact the Ukrainian military in Azovstal.
