Retired general Petr Pavel defeated billionaire Andrej Babiš in the second round of the Czech presidential election with 90% of the vote counted.
Former commander of the Czech General Staff, retired General Petr Pavel defeated billionaire Andrei Babis in the second round of the Czech presidential election. After 90% of the votes were counted, Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala congratulated Pavel on his election as head of state, České noviny reports.
“The civilian candidate won, the values he represents won,” Fiala said.
Radio Liberty said Pavel also supports military aid to Ukraine and has even raised funds for it on his own initiative. He is considered a great friend of Ukraine.
For those who voted for Pavel, and for those who follow Czech politics, he is a man of principle and integrity.
Voting in the Czech Republic lasted two days – January 27 and 28.
It will be remembered that Pavel’s rival, Andrei Babish, said that if he was elected president, he would not send Czech soldiers to Poland and the Baltic countries if Russia nevertheless invaded Europe.
