On Thursday, former President Donald Trump unleashed a heated culture war directly into America’s classrooms, calling for a video to certify “patriotic teachers,” fire “radicals” and “directly elect” school principals from among parents.
The Republican presidential candidate also called for defunding any schools that teach “critical race theory, gender ideology, or other racially, sexually or politically inappropriate content,” apparently as he defines it.
Trump called for the creation of a “new accrediting body” that “certifies teachers who embrace patriotic values,” while “radicals, bigots and Marxists” (and “pink-haired communists”) would be fired. (Trump hailed the insurgents on January 6, 2021 as “great patriots”).
He also called for an investigation into school districts that have engaged in racial discrimination, including against Asian-American students. Ironically, Trump himself has repeatedly hurled anti-Asian slurs at Republican Sen. Mitch McConnell’s wife, Elaine Chao, his former transportation secretary.
The video, posted on Twitter, has probably caused a stir on the social media platform.
Several posters referred to the so-called Trump University (which has never been certified as any kind of school) promising to teach adult students how to be successful business people. Trump ended up paying $25 million to settle allegations that students were defrauded by the operation.
