The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) conducted an internal audit of the former head of the department and a friend of the president, Ivan Bakanov. The secret service has not yet disclosed the results.
According to the information of the competent units of the Security Service of Ukraine, an internal audit was carried out on the issue you indicated (the fact of an internal audit on Bakanov – ed.). At the same time, we note that the results of the check are information with limited access. According to paragraph 1 h. 1 s. 9 of the Law “On Access to Public Information”, the requested information is official information, the SBU letter says in response to the “Word and Deed” request.
In July 2022, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky removed the head of the SBU Bakanov from his post.
Then the head of state explained that the main reason for the removal was an abnormally large number of traitors among the intelligence service.
Zelensky noted that 651 criminal proceedings were registered on high treason and collaborationism of employees of the prosecutor’s office, pre-trial investigation, the SBU and other law enforcement agencies. More than 60 employees of the prosecutor’s office and the SBU openly went over to the side of the enemy, remained in the occupied territory and work for the occupiers. In 198 proceedings, suspicion has already been reported to the main defendants.
As Andrey Smirnov, deputy head of the President’s Office, explained at the time, Bakanov would be subject to an internal audit, as a result of which the issue of dismissal would be adopted. A few days later, Bakanov was fired from his post.
