Misinformation about COVID-19 has caused more than 2,800 deaths in Canada and cost the national health care system hundreds of millions of dollars.
A report by the Canadian Council of Academies, an independent scientific organization, notes that misinformation has led millions of Canadians to disbelieve that COVID-19 was it real or vaccine were safe from disease.
Experts estimate that if “those who believe COVID-19 was a scam got vaccinated when they could, more than 2.3 million Canadians would be vaccinated, resulting in a reduction of approximately 198,000 cases, 13,000 hospitalizations and 2,800 deaths between March 1 and November 30, 2021.”

In addition, the cost of hospitalizations due to vaccination refusal was at least CAD 300 million, which is about US$ 222 million.
The authors cautioned that these figures are “conservative” because they do not include “other direct health care costs such as medical staff salaries” or the impact on society.
Report qualified health and scientific misinformation causes great public concern, exposing people to “individual and collective harm”. (EFE)
