California Governor Gavin Newsom didn’t hold back when he questioned the price of “freedom” in an emotional interview on CNN this week.
Newsom’s remarks come after mass shootings in two California communities — one in Los Angeles-area Monterey Park on Saturday and the other in Half Moon Bay, south of San Francisco on Monday — left at least 18 dead and more than 10 injured. .
The Democratic governor, whose state bans weapons like the one allegedly seen in the Monterey Park ballroom shootings, criticized the federal government and called on politicians to do their jobs in the wake of the two deadly shootings.
“This is up to each individual, this is our choice, this is our decision to live under these conditions,” Newsom said.
“Freedom? That’s the price? Freedom? Freedom for what? You only make your child do six or seven exercises to hide under the desk every year instead of two or three? Freedom for what? You have a total vulnerability to be anywhere in a crowd, to dance with a loved one on New Year’s Eve? Lunar New Year?”
Newsom, who previously tore up the Second Amendment as a “suicide pact,” argued that victims — like those involved in the Half Moon Bay ranch shooting — couldn’t afford to stay in the hospital because they couldn’t pay the bills for health care. and I had to go back to work.
“The utter and abject failure of our immigration policy was on display yesterday and today, the utter and abject failure of common sense when it comes to gun safety and immigration policy,” Newsom said.
