The use of biodegradable bags has more than doubled. The reduction in the sale of plastic bags occurred in the face of an increase in the price of their purchase.
Ukrainians reduced the use of plastic bags by 40-90% in the year the government decided to set a minimum retail price for them. At the same time, the consumption of biodegradable bags more than doubled. This was announced by the First Deputy Minister of Economy of Ukraine Denis Kudin based on the analysis of information provided by the Association of Retailers of Ukraine.
“The decision of the government, which set the minimum retail price for plastic bags, gave significant results throughout the year – Ukrainians reduced the purchase of such bags from 40% to 90%, depending on their types . And more and more often they use biodegradable ones that do not pollute the environment. In particular, in some supermarket chains, sales of biodegradable bags in 2022 will increase 13-15 times,” said Kudin.
According to him, the decrease in sales of plastic bags occurred in the face of the increase in prices for their purchase, which contributed to the creation of the necessary economic guarantees for manufacturers of plastic bags.
And also – these manufacturers were encouraged to modernize production and technological processes and develop the production of biodegradable plastic bags, and ultimately led to an increase in their sales.
The minimum retail price for plastic bags with walls more than 50 micrometers thick has been introduced from February 1, 2022 to reduce the use of plastic bags in Ukraine and limit their distribution.
