Slovakia and Hungary are highly dependent on Russia’s oil supplies. The EU can make concessions to these countries for the sake of maintaining unity.
Slovakia intends to seek an exception for itself if the European Union imposes a ban on Russia’s oil supplies. This was announced by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy Richard Sulik, Reuters reports.
According to him, Russia provides 100% of the needs of Slovak consumers in oil.
“Slovakia will insist on providing an exception for itself if the EU decides to impose an embargo on oil supplies,” Sulik told reporters after an extraordinary meeting of EU energy ministers.
Referring to European Union representatives, Reuters wrote that the EU could make concessions to Hungary and Slovakia to maintain unity. Two options are considered – exclusion or a long transitional period.
The day before it was reported that Hungary, Austria and Slovakia, which until recently had blocked oil sanctions, had changed their minds.
