Last October, Olga Pavlova, a pensioner from Novgorod in northwest Russia, nearly fell ill when neighbors showed her a video of her identifying her brother’s killer with three men. All ex-criminals were conscripted to fight in prison in Ukraine. All four were amputated, of course, on the way back from the front, but alive, free, pardoned and warmly congratulated by the very man who enlisted them, Yevgeny Prigogine, the mercenary leader of the Wagner group. Ten years ago, Stanislav Bogdanov, now 35, murdered 32-year-old judge Sergey Zhiganov in cold blood at his home after torturing him overnight with pokers to extract money and PIN codes from bank cards.
