Former President Donald Trump awkwardly claimed he “didn’t know” Silk, one half of the popular conservative duo Diamond & Silk, during a speech at his sister Diamond’s funeral on Saturday.
Lynette “Diamond” Hardaway, who supported Trump alongside her sister, died earlier this month at the age of 51 in what the former president described as a “totally” unexpected event.
Trump made a service appearance in North Carolina, where — in addition to his diamond musings — joked about inflation and gas prices as it listed a number of political grievances.
The former president, who has visited the couple at the White House and included them at rallies in the past, called Diamond one of the world’s “brightest stars” before making an odd remark about his sister.
“I’m serious, I thought I knew them both. The no. I knew Diamond, but I didn’t know Silk at all. Just heard about Silk. You’re amazing,” Trump said.
Trump later spoke to the crowd at the memorial service before using his time on stage to reveal how the planning for the event went.
“The chapel would not have accommodated the type of people, the number of people that we have,” Trump said.
“And we’re doing it right and that’s the way it should be and we’ve noticed a large number of very, very nice vehicles there. Must be treated well, right? So we’ll do it right. Go out in style. He knew. Go out in style.
Trump also took aim at the three-hour-plus service, which he said was “a little over 15 minutes.”
