Denis Kireev, an employee of the GUR and a participant in Ukrainian-Russian negotiations in Belarus, was killed in an SBU car, and his body was thrown into the street.
Kirill Budanov, head of the Main Intelligence Directorate (GUR), spoke about this in an interview with Radio Liberty.
Budanov is sure that Kireev was a Ukrainian intelligence officer, not a spy. He noted that he personally knew Kireev since 2009.
I share the opinion and believe the facts that Kireev was killed in the car of the SBU when they held an event on this occasion. This fact is recorded, it is in the materials of the investigation. Everything else – the investigation is conducted by the DBR. I have no right to comment on this information, – the head of the GUR emphasized.
According to Budanov, Kireev was called to a meeting with the SBU from his office, so he went accompanied by two internal security officers.
For about 200 meters to the central building of the SBU (it went there), a bus drove out, that is, it just escaped into the oncoming one, Alfa employees ran out shouting “This is the SBU!”, operatives came out, they said that they were from the SBU,” Budanov noted . Kireev told everyone to stop. Then he was transferred to a minibus, which did not go to this central building, but after several blocks. Then something happened that happened… And his body fell out of this minibus. Here are the facts.
Draw your own conclusions,” he stressed, answering the question whether Kireev was executed extrajudicially.
Budanov also said that he talked about this with the then head of the SBU Ivan Bakanov.
This was my last conversation with him,” Budanov said. He couldn’t really explain anything.
He added that he knows all the people who committed the murder of Kireev.
According to Budanov, the main task set by Kireeva was to delay the negotiation process with the Russians in order to buy time – he personally knew two participants in the negotiation process from the Russian side.
I can express absolutely my subjective opinion. Once again, I want to emphasize this: the one who deliberately did this (the murder of Kireev – ed.) had the goal of preventing us from interfering in someone else’s game and dragging out this process in order to allow our Armed Forces, let’s say, to make certain actions to repulse the enemy,” he stressed.
