In the spring, Russia will likely attempt a new large-scale offensive, Josep Borrell said
The supply of Leopard tanks for the Armed Forces of Ukraine was not approved, mainly due to Germany’s reluctance, even though the Armed Forces of Ukraine needed this equipment to protect against a new Russian offensive. This is what EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell said in an interview with elDiario.
He believes that the war in Ukraine has reached a stage of stagnation. Meanwhile, in Europe, talks about moving heavy tanks to Kyiv continue.
“There is a discussion about whether to give Ukraine weapons that will allow not only to contain the Russians, but also to fight, breaking their front. And this is the discussion about tanks that is happening now, and which is gradually -slowly. , the decision on the supply of these weapons is too gradual,” said Borrell.
The EU High Representative supports the supply of tanks, because otherwise the war will continue. However, such a decision is prevented by Berlin.
“It is a political decision that has not been made so far mainly because of Germany’s reluctance. But if it is not achieved, the war will continue until next spring, when Russia will probably try to start a new offensive,” Borrell added.
Earlier, the American publication Business Insider reported that the German Ministry of Defense deliberately delayed the inventory of existing Leopard tanks in order not to create additional expectations and pressure on the government regarding their possible transfer to Ukraine. According to the publication, such an order was given only today, upon the arrival of the new head of the Ministry of Defense.
