The Bundeswehr has 212 Leopard tanks of all modifications. For the intended delivery to Ukraine, 19 Leopard 2A5 tanks were listed, which were used only for exercises.
Germany has 212 available Leopard 2 tanks of various modifications, of which 19 Leopard 2A5 tanks could theoretically be transferred to Ukraine. This was announced on Saturday, January 21, by the German edition of Der Spiegel, citing its sources.
Journalists received a list of all models of Leopard 2 tanks that Germany has. This list is compiled at the beginning of the summer of 2022 in case there is a decision to transfer them to Ukraine.
According to the list, the Bundeswehr has a total of 312 Leopard 2 tanks, of which 99 were under repair in May last year, and one has already been decommissioned.
In addition to them, there are 212 Leopard 2 models on the list. Among them, the different models are 2A5, 2A6, 2A7 and 2A7V, which is the most modern version. As of May 22, the troop had 53 Leopard 2A7V units.
According to the publication’s sources, the list also contains information on which models are suitable for delivery to Ukraine. It can be assumed that the Bundeswehr can transfer 19 models of Leopard 2A5. According to the list, they are now being used to simulate enemy forces at the army’s combat training center. The military says they can do without the 2A5 models, as they are only used for exercises.
Earlier, the American publication Business Insider reported that the German Ministry of Defense deliberately delayed the inventory of existing Leopard tanks in order not to create additional expectations and pressure on the government regarding their possible transfer to Ukraine. According to the publication, such an order was given only today, upon the arrival of the new head of the Ministry of Defense.
As already reported, Rammstein-8 did not approve the transfer of tanks to Ukraine.
