It is planned to restrict Russia’s energy exports as part of an effort to punish Moscow for its aggression on Ukraine.
The European Union may approve a sixth package of sanctions against Russia at the next meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council. This was stated by the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, at a press conference in Panama City, reports Reuters.
He noted that the bloc hopes to restrict Russia’s energy exports as part of an effort to punish Moscow for its aggression on Ukraine.
The European Commission is expected to propose a package of EU sanctions this week, including a potential embargo on Russia’s oil purchases.
Borrell said he hoped the EU could take “steps to completely limit these imports,” but so far there has been no agreement from all members.
“But I am sure that, at least with oil imports, this agreement will be possible before the next Council meeting,” he said.
The EU Council meeting is scheduled for May 10 and May 16.
Recall that Poland will present at the summit in Brussels a proposal to impose a tax on raw materials from the Russian Federation.
