minister Chris Hipkinsresponsible for combating the COVID-19 pandemic was appointed by the Labor Party as a replacement Jacinda Ardern and the future Prime Minister of New Zealand, announced this on Friday in a statement.
Hipkins, 44, was yet to be formally elected to leadership of the center-left party on Sunday.
The new head of government will replace Ardern after his unexpected resignation on Thursday and will lead his party in the next legislative elections scheduled for October, in which he will not be the favorite.
Chris Hipkins He has served as interior minister since June last year, having previously held positions in education and public service.
His handling of the pandemic has been praised in a country where borders were closed in 2020 and didn’t reopen until last August.
After arriving at the Ministry of Internal Affairs, he admitted that the public was tired of sanitary restrictions and border closures.
