The head of the Kano state health department, Aminu Canyava, reported 25 deaths and 70 others infected.
An outbreak of diphtheria has been recorded in Nigeria. This was announced by the Director General of the Nigerian Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Ifedayo Adetifa, Nigerian newspaper PUNCH writes.
“We have received data on diphtheria cases in Lagos, Kano, Osun and Yobe states,” Adetifa said.
However, he did not name the number of infected people. In this regard, the head of the Kano state health department, Aminu Canyava, reported 25 deaths and another 70 infected.
Authorities are taking measures to prevent further spread of diphtheria. Among them – emergency vaccination of children.
Diphtheria is an infectious disease caused by a specific bacterium. In severe cases, diphtheria leads to blockage of a person’s airways.
Recall that the WHO previously stated that the world has a significant decrease in the vaccination rate of children against measles, polio, diphtheria, tetanus and whooping cough, which can cause the spread of these diseases.
