Alec Baldwin, a well-known American actor, will be prosecuted for the manslaughter of Ukrainian-born cameraman Galina Hutchins, who died after a gunshot was fired by him during the filming of Rust.
Hannah Gutierrez Reed, who is responsible for the weapons in this film, will also be charged. This is reported by the BBC with reference to the prosecutor of the city of Santa Fe in the state of New Mexico, Mary Carmack-Altvis.
Both defendants face up to 18 months in prison and a $5,000 fine. United States, if found guilty. They will be tried by a jury.
The film’s assistant director, David Halls, has already pleaded guilty to charges of negligent use of a deadly weapon. He received six months of probation.
Film director Joel Souza was also wounded by bullet debris during a tragic incident on the set of Jiri, but prosecutors said no charges would be filed.
Baldwin’s lawyer has already called the decision “a terrible miscarriage of justice.”
Mr. Baldwin had no reason to believe that the battle ball was in a gun or somewhere on the set, the lawyer notes. “He relied on the professionals he worked with to assure him that there was no live ammunition in the gun. We will fight these accusations and win.
Reed’s lawyer, for his part, said that the announcement of the charges is the result of “a very flawed investigation and an inaccurate understanding of all the facts.”
