The MP who called for the phase-out of electric vehicles says he has “no problem” with them

A Republican state senator from Wyoming who co-sponsored legislation that says the widespread use of electric vehicles will have “detrimental impacts” on the state now says he has no problem with the types of cars.

State Sen. Jim Anderson told the Washington Post on Monday that he has introduced a joint resolution calling for the “phasing out of the sale of new electric vehicles in Wyoming by 2035” in response to a plan announced by California over the summer to ban the sale of new electric vehicles. vehicles. cars powered by fossil fuels until the same year.

Other states are poised to follow California’s lead.

Anderson said he really doesn’t mind electric cars and added that people should be free to make their own choices.

“I have no problem with electric vehicles,” Anderson told the Post.

He continued: “I have a problem with anyone who says, ‘Stop buying oil vehicles.’

However, the resolution he introduced with GOP state senators Brian Boner, Ed Cooper and Dan Dockstader and state representatives Donald Burkhart and Bill Henderson explicitly calls on state industries and citizens to “restrict the sale and purchase of new electric vehicles. in Wyoming with the goal of phasing out the sale of new electric vehicles” by 2035.

Anderson told the Post that while their bill is “just a resolution” expressing distaste for the California bill, the Golden State will lobby people to buy electric vehicles. California law will not prohibit the sale of used vehicles or classic cars that run on gasoline.

In the joint resolution, the six Republican lawmakers listed several problems with electric cars, including that Wyoming’s long highways and lack of charging stations make using the cars “impractical.”

The state is expected to receive about $24 million over five years to install charging infrastructure along Interstates 80, 25 and 90, according to a plan announced by the Wyoming Department of Transportation in June.

The joint resolution also stated that the critical minerals contained in the batteries of such vehicles are difficult to recycle and their domestic supply is prone to disruption.

Meanwhile, the oil and gas industry has helped create “countless jobs” for people in the state, they said, warning of the dangers associated with more widespread use of electric cars.

“The proliferation of electric vehicles at the expense of gas vehicles will have a negative impact on Wyoming communities and will be detrimental to Wyoming’s economy and the country’s ability to effectively engage in commerce,” the bill states.

The Environmental Protection Agency states that transportation is “one of the largest contributors to anthropogenic greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the United States.”
