The European Union will allocate to Ukraine the first tranche in the amount of 3 billion euros from macro-financial assistance in 2023 for a total of 18 billion euros already on January 17. This was announced by the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen in Twitter on Monday.
“Helping Ukraine meet its financial needs to counter Russian aggression is very important and urgent. The Commission is acting with utmost speed and determination. Tomorrow we will pay the first 3 billion euros of the 18 billion euros of the macro -financial support agreed upon in December,” he wrote.
Earlier today, Ukraine and the EU signed a memorandum of understanding and a loan agreement for Ukraine to receive specified macro-financial assistance, which contains the conditions for its allocation, but has not yet been published.
“At a time of Russia’s systematic destruction of civilian and critical infrastructure, Ukraine relies on support from partner countries and needs a rhythmic and predictable flow of funds to finance the social and humanitarian needs of the state budget,” said Minister of Finance Serhiy Marchenko.
Earlier, the IMF predicted that Ukraine may need up to $57 billion in external financing by 2023.
