London also summoned the chargé d’affaires and imposed sanctions on the Iranian Attorney General.
British authorities have temporarily recalled their ambassador from Iran. This was announced by British Foreign Secretary James Cleverley in Twitter Saturday evening, January 14th.
This was in response to the execution of former Iranian Deputy Defense Minister Alireza Akbari, who had a second British citizenship.
“We hold the regime accountable. The UK has now sanctioned Iran’s attorney general, summoned a chargé d’affaires and temporarily recalled the British ambassador for consultations. Our response to Iran is not limited at this time, considering We will take further action,” Cleverley wrote.
On the eve of the state agency Mizan it was reported that the former Deputy Defense Minister Alireza Akbari was hanged in Iran. When exactly the execution was carried out was not specified, however, according to the AP agency, citing its sources, it may have happened a few days ago.
Akbari was arrested by Iranian authorities in 2019, after which he was charged with spying for British intelligence MI6. A video was posted on the Internet in which the former officer admitted that he was working for British intelligence. However, human rights activists point out that many traces of editing can be seen in the video, and, apparently, the confessions were forced out of Akbari through torture.
The British Foreign Office called the execution of a British citizen “barbarism” that “deserves condemnation in the strongest terms.” Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, meanwhile, spoke of the “heartless and cowardly” act of “a regime that does not respect the rights of its own citizens.”
Remember that in Iran, executions of participants in mass protests are in full swing. It was also reported that more than 14 thousand people could be hanged in the country.
