The United Nations Development Programme, in collaboration with the World Bank, is assessing the damage caused by Ukraine.
According to the UN, 18,096 Ukrainian civilians have been affected since the full-scale invasion began. Among them, 6,952 people died, another 11,144 were injured, said UN Deputy Secretary General Rosemary DiCarlo, speaking at a meeting of the Security Council, dedicated to the crisis in Ukraine. On Saturday, January 14, the Voice of America reports.
According to Dicarlo, since the beginning of December in Bakhmut, 22 civilians have been killed and 72 others have been injured due to the intensified fighting.
At the same time, he emphasized that the real numbers could be higher.
DiCarlo emphasized that the war has taken a toll on Ukraine. According to him, the Russian invasion led to the fact that 7.9 million Ukrainians were forced to leave and move to neighboring European countries. Another 5.91 million people became internally displaced.
At the same time, systematic attacks on civilian infrastructure facilities worsen the situation, forcing more people to leave their homes.
Also, the UN has data that 745 attacks on medical facilities have been carried out in Ukraine, which is the highest number in the world. In Donetsk, Zaporozhye, Mykolaiv and Kharkiv regions, up to 50 percent of all medical facilities are partially or completely non-functional.
According to Dikralo, Ukrainians spent most of their winter vacations in bomb shelters and basements, hiding from Russian shelling. Shooting continued even on Orthodox Christmas, when Moscow announced a unilateral ceasefire.
“Almost all of Ukraine celebrated the New Year with the sound of air-raid alarms,” Dicarlo said.
It will be remembered that the Permanent Representative of Ukraine to the United Nations, Serhiy Kislitsa, emotionally addressed the members of the UN Security Council after the Russian missile attack on a high-rise building in the Dnieper.
It should be noted that the Ukrainian Ambassador to Turkey Vasily Bondar said that the Ukrainian peace summit at the United Nations is scheduled for February 24 in New York.
