The country’s Prosecutor General’s Office wants to investigate whether Jair Bolsonaro is the mastermind behind the pogroms in the capital.
On Friday, January 13, the Federal Supreme Court of Brazil included former president Jair Bolsonaro in the list of defendants in the investigation into pogroms in the country’s capital.
This was done after a corresponding request from the Office of the Prosecutor General, which suspects that Bolsonaro may be the ideologue and instigator of the seizure of state institutions.
Despite the fact that on Monday, January 9, Bolsonaro distanced himself from his supporters who rioted on Sunday at the buildings of the National Congress, the Supreme Court and the presidential palace in the Plaza of the Three Powers in the center of Brasilia, his behavior . on social networks raised questions from law enforcement officials.
On Monday, he posted a video in which he questioned the legitimacy of the presidential election result that he lost and thus could call a violation of the law. Bolsonaro deleted the post the next day.
Elections and riots in Brazil
On October 30, the second round of presidential elections took place in Brazil, where Luis Inacio Lula da Silva won with a result of 50.9% against 49.1% of the vote.
On January 8, approximately five thousand Bolsonaro supporters entered government buildings in the capital, erected barricades in them, and attacked the police with rocks and sticks.
In Brasilia, a state of emergency was declared, security forces quelled the riots with water cannons, tear gas and flash grenades.
Bolsonaro himself was in Florida during the riots. On Monday, he was hospitalized due to severe abdominal pain.
