DIE WORLD: Ms. Schmid, the OSCE has 57 states representing 1.3 billion people. Russia has blocked the budget since 2022. Will you have to quit your job soon?
Helga Maria Schmid. 2022 was a very difficult year for the OSCE, and not just because of the budget. However, we managed to mobilize more extra-budgetary resources, resources from some member states, including Germany. This guarantees the Organization’s operational capabilities, including its twelve missions.
You even created a new mission in Ukraine.
Last year, when Russia withdrew its support, we were forced to suspend two long-term missions in Ukraine, including a cease-fire monitoring mission in Donbas, despite the support of all other states and against Ukraine’s clear will.
