The Latvian Foreign Minister noted that the democratic world must “arm itself with strategic patience and maximum restraint.”
The West must be prepared for various scenarios of Russia’s collapse. This is what Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics said in the Latvian Radio Krustpunktā program, reports LSM.lv.
“For the ruling regime in the Russian Federation, the war it unleashed against Ukraine is a matter of survival. Therefore, the democratic world should not fear the collapse of the Russian Federation, but arm itself with strategic patience and maximum restraint ,” said Rinkevics.
According to him, the West should be prepared for various scenarios of the collapse of the Russian Federation, because in this case many important questions will arise, especially regarding nuclear weapons, migration flows and internal process in Russia.
“In the context of the war in Ukraine, the West should focus on the maximum weakening of the Russian Federation, but the outcome of the war, first of all, will be determined by the Ukrainian soldiers at the front,” the minister emphasized.
Rinkevics also noted that the sanctions against Russia are generally effective, but some of them, introduced last spring, are only beginning to take effect. Therefore, their influence on the Russian Federation will be felt only in 2023. However, this definition applies mainly to EU and G7 countries. At the same time, the sanctions are fully effective, because the Russian Federation has the opportunity to trade with China, as well as with other countries in Asia and Latin America.
The Minister said that Latvia will continue to insist on additional sanctions on Russia’s energy resources and financial sector.
According to Rinkevics, an alarming question has arisen at the level of the European Union regarding the avoidance of sanctions by the Russian Federation. Therefore, the EU is also discussing the application of sanctions to countries that help the Russian Federation evade the sanctions imposed on it. The minister believes that the gap in the sanctions policy is the control of sanctions.
It was previously reported that Latvia’s aid to Ukraine amounted to 0.93% of Latvian GDP.
