Main weather disasters A federal report released Tuesday that hit the United States in 2022 put at least $165 billion in damages that blamed the effects of climate change.
This is the third largest annual amount since the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) began collecting this data in 1980. The most costly disaster of 2022 was hurricane yang which devastated Florida in September, causing $112.9 billion in damage.
The other two years with the most damage are 2005 (Hurricane Katrina) and 2017 (Hurricanes Harvey and Irma).
For the calculation, NOAA takes into account the destruction of buildings, public infrastructure (bridges, roads…), loss of company profits and even the impact on agriculture, but not the indirect costs or costs of maintenance, sanitation.
After Yan, the second most costly disaster was the heat and drought that engulfed the western and central regions. United States of Americaworth more than 22 billion
Disasters in the USA
Total USA affected 18 weather disasters last year, which also made it the third-highest year after 2020 and 2021.
The report notes that the figures do not reflect the full cost of these weather and climate disasters in United States of America last year, but only those associated with major disasters, each of which caused more than $1 billion in damage.
The concentration of major weather events in recent years points to a “new normal,” NOAA warns. (AFP)
