Berlin will still try to bring India into a broad international alliance to isolate Russia.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz is trying to change the position of some states that are still “neutral” towards Russia after its attack on Ukraine, sources told Bloomberg.
According to the agency, Chancellor Scholz will use his powers as G7 presiding officer. He plans to invite Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a special guest at the group’s summit to be held in the Bavarian Alps from June 26 to 28.
The possibility was considered then, but Scholz’s invitation was slow, due to the Indian premier’s reluctance to denounce Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and Russia’s increasing supplies of fossil fuel such as oil to India. These actions of the Indian government have not changed, but Berlin will still try to bring Modi into a broad international alliance to isolate Russia.
In the medium term, Germany also wants European defense companies to offer India an alternative to Russia’s arms supplies.
Germany will also invite the leaders of Indonesia, South Africa and Senegal to the G7 summit.
Recall that Germany decided to give Ukraine heavy weapons.
