Turkey has begun sending American-designed cluster munitions, manufactured during the Cold War, to Ukraine.
By the end of 2022, Turkey has begun the covert delivery of US-made cluster shells to the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Foreign Policy wrote this on Tuesday, January 10, citing its own sources.
We are talking about advanced dual-purpose conventional munitions (dual-purpose improved conventional munitions, DPICM). They are designed, among other things, to destroy armored vehicles, and each projectile scatters 88 charges.
According to sources, Turkey in November 2022 began supplying Ukraine with cluster shells produced during the Cold War under a joint production agreement with the United States. The publication said that this happened after Washington refused to transfer stocks of such ammunition to Kyiv, and Turkey became the only country from which Ukraine could receive them.
“This shows that although Turkey is getting closer to Russia in some aspects, it is a fundamentally important military ally of Ukraine,” said one of the FP sources.
A cluster round breaks up into dozens of smaller charges that can remain on the battlefield for years if they are not detonated immediately. US law prohibits the export of such projectiles.
The use of cluster munitions is strictly limited by international agreements, and their use must not pose a threat to civilian objects and the civilian population.
Note that Turkey supports the 10-point peace plan proposed by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Recall that Turkey continues to develop unmanned military boats that can operate in “swarm” mode.
In addition, Turkey conducted the first aerial test of the Bayraktar Kızılelma unmanned fighter.
