Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture said on Monday that almost 10 million birds, a record number, have been slaughtered in Japan’s poultry farms since October last year to contain bird flu.
The number of culls jumped to 9.98 million after Ibaraki Prefecture (northeast of Tokyo) also announced today that it has begun culling some 930,000 chickens at a farm in the city of Shirosato, confirming the presence of the virus in a test.
According to said ministry, the previous record was 9.87 million birds per season from November 2020 to March 2021.
As of Monday, a record 56 outbreaks have been confirmed in 23 of Japan’s 47 prefectures since the first case was identified last October in poultry farm Okayama Prefecture (western Japan).
The first outbreak in the Kanto region (center) occurred in November last year, when Japanese authorities ordered the slaughter of about a million chickens from various farms also in Ibaraki Prefecture.
Incidents this season include the killing of around 430 emus in Fukuoka Prefecture (south), and it is believed they may have been motivated by influence migratory birds on these farms. (EFE)
