The head of Poland’s International Policy Bureau said that Warsaw could provide Kyiv with a “symbolic number” of such tanks.
Poland may transfer to Ukraine a “symbolic” number of German-made Leopard 2 battle tanks – about a dozen. It can provide this weapon in coalition with other states that have such weapons. This was said by the head of Poland’s Bureau of International Policy, Jakub Kumoch, in an interview with the Polish editions TVN24 and WNP.PL, published on Monday, January 9.
“This issue is being considered … Here we are not talking about the transfer of all Leopards or a large number, this is completely false information. Only about some kind of symbolic support and participation in the coalition of some country,” he said.
According to him, “symbolic support” could mean giving Kyiv a few or almost a dozen tanks.
“To say that Poland will give a few tens or a few hundred units (Leopard tank – Ed.) is absurd. It creates an alternative reality. Ukraine is interested in Western countries to give it a certain limited number of this type of tanks. Poland has them. Poland, as the prime minister said, can be part of such a coalition,” added Kumoch.
According to him, Poland alone cannot change the course of the war by providing a few or a dozen tanks.
He also added that the President of Poland Andrzej Duda will hold a meeting of the National Security Bureau on January 9, where this issue will be discussed.
Note that the other day, the American edition of The Wall Street Journal published information that Poland is considering the possibility of transferring Leopard main battle tanks to Ukraine. The country has more than 240 of these tanks, enough for two tank brigades.
Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said Warsaw expected a broad coalition to transfer such heavy weapons to Ukraine.
As previously reported, Polish Defense Minister Mariusz Blaszczak on Wednesday, January 4, signed an agreement to purchase 116 Abrams M1A1 tanks from the United States, which are already operational. These tanks will strengthen NATO’s eastern flank.
Earlier, the US State Department decided to sell an additional 116 Abrams tanks with ammunition to Poland.
